Creating a Resource Dependency

While most Recovery Kits create their dependencies during the original resource hierarchy creation task, under certain circumstances, you may want to create new or additional resource dependencies or delete existing ones. An example might be that you wish to change an existing IP dependency to another IP address. Instead of deleting the entire resource hierarchy and creating a new one, you can delete the existing IP dependency and create a new dependency with a different IP address.

  1. From the LifeKeeper GUI menu, select Edit, then Resource. From the drop down menu, select Create Dependency.

  2. In the Server box, select a server in the cluster where the resource resides. The dependency will be created across all the hierarchies where the resource has been extended. Click  Next to proceed to the next dialog box.

Note:  If you selected the Create Dependency task by right clicking from either the left pane on a global resource instance or the right pane on an individual resource instance, this dialog will not appear. If you right clicked on a resource instance in the right pane, the value of the Server will be the server for that instance. If you right click on a global resource in the left pane, the value of the Server will default to the server currently designated as primary server for the selected global resource. The primary server is defined as the server where the resource has the highest priority.

  1. Select a Parent Resource Tag from the drop down box of existing resources on the server you selected in the previous dialog box. The resource you select will be dependent on the child resource you select in the next dialog box. Click  Next to proceed to the next dialog box.

Note:  If you selected the Create Dependency task by right clicking from either the left pane on a global resource or the right pane on an individual resource instance, this dialog will not appear. If you right clicked on a resource instance in the right pane, the value of the Parent Resource Tag will be the tag corresponding to that particular resource instance. If you right click on a global resource in the left pane, the value of the Parent Resource Tag will default to the tag corresponding to the resource instance on the server currently designated as primary for the selected global resource.

  1. Select a Child Resource Tag from the drop down box of existing and valid resources on the server. The dialog box will display all the resources available on the server with the following exceptions:

Click Next to proceed to the next dialog box.

  1. A dialog box appears to confirm that you have selected the appropriate parent and child resource tags for your dependency creation. Click Create Dependency to create the dependency and proceed to the next dialog box.

  2. Another information box appears showing the results of the dependency creation and confirming that the dependency was created successfully. Click Done to exit the Create Dependency menu selection.
